343: tidbits

hi there.

i thought i would share a few images from ku:nel magazine today. mav very kindly sent me a copy. this magazine is beautiful, and i love it even though i can't read a word of it. thanks friend!

it doesn't matter though because there is so much eye candy. i love these shoes for example.

i always enjoy taking a peek at other people's planners. look closely and you will see rose bakery! speaking of which, i have misplaced my copy of breakfast, lunch, tea. i'm beside myself.

will you be at wender's sweets party on june 11th? i will...if i can find my cookbook. ;)

other things i'm loving:

jen's newest print. cairns and pine needles.

mav's collection of photos. have you seen these? gorgeous. i find myself visiting them often.

martha has updated her shop with lovely, lovely pieces. i adore this look.

the garden party will have you laughing out loud.

have a good day.

342: in which summer arrives in the form of lightning bugs

today, i had plans to show you the giant slug and the beautiful little garden spider that live in our barley patch. however, the arachnid and mollusk would not cooperate, or was it my canon powershot that was causing trouble? oh powershot, do you sense that you are about to be replaced? still debating the nikon d40x vs. the canon rebel xt or xti. can't make up my mind. so if you have strong feelings about this dilemma, now is the time to persuade me. :)

above please notice ice cubes. lots of them. it is HOT here. i'll try not to say that again. ahem. ok.

yesterday we had lots of friends visit which was so nice. e and s brought over emergency chocolate in the form of delicious chocolate cookies and some dvds to keep the patient occupied. ap brought beautiful rapsberry colored vinca, and ag brought aloe juice loaded with vitamins and minerals for t.

with t's appetite back in full force, i finally prepared my first meal from the kitchen diaries. we had simple salads with romaine lettuce, walnut oil, walnuts, red wine vinegar and golden raisins. the last 2 ingredients i added in myself. our main course was goat cheese puddings with thyme. these were so simple to make and they puffed up so lovely in the oven like little souffles. the texture was absolutely perfect. light and very creamy. i was amazed that these little treats were made be me in my kitchen. bravo nigel!

dessert was scoops of mango and pistachio gelato served with the aforementioned chocolate crisps. the highlight of the evening for us was seeing the first lightning bugs of the season. yep. it's hot here and the lightning bugs make it official. though the calendar calls june 21 the first day of summer, the lightning bugs say otherwise. welcome sticky summer. how was your brief vacation?

today is an exciting day because the card society turns 1! mav has all kinds of surprises in store so do visit p2p as well as her etsy shop.

also, abigail has created gorgeous silver silhouettes of some beautiful botanicals. the little pine necklace will be around my neck soon. seems like the perfect choice for me since i love pine trees and photograph them often. it's an early bday gift to myself.

finally, i really like the food photography of lisa linder. be sure to also check out her portrait of dries van noten. cute.

t is better every day. he says hi.

hi friends.

the opening lines from the year of magical thinking have been in my head all weekend.

"Life changes fast. Life changes in the instant. You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends."

i was in the middle of making dinner on wednesday night when i received a phonecall. it was t and he told me that he had been hit by a car. i was in a complete state of shock and before i even had a chance to react, t put a firefighter on the phone who calmly told me that he was fine but had a broken arm and that i needed to go to the ER.

t had been riding his bicycle home from the farm when a courier van traveling at 40 mph hit his left arm, knocking him off his bicycle and into the grass. it was a serious break and while i was driving to the ER i thought that he would just have a cast, that i would go to the ER, pick him up, and we would still be able to eat dinner together and watch the season finale of LOST.

instead, i soon learned that he needed emergency surgery. the bone had poked through his skin and was broken in several places. he needed a metal rod and screws to hold it together and he was losing blood. i saw him quickly before the surgery and then waited for five or so hours (the surgery took four) to hear how the surgery went.

and miraculously, he is fine. as of saturday, he is home and continues to improve every day. today he has been up and eating at the table. he even walked outside for a bit of fresh air and to check on our garden.

i keep thinking about the fact that the accident could have been much worse. the paramedics were concerned about his neck and pelvis, two areas that are usually affected in bicycle accidents. they even did CT scans of these areas because they couldn't believe that his arm was the only part of him that was injured. yet, he is 100% fine except for his arm.

i cannot tell you how wonderful it was to hear his voice after the surgery, to sit beside him while he was sleeping. the air seemed fresher, the sky seemed bluer. everything seemed crisper.

life deserves to be treasured. each and every moment. sometimes we forget this, and let the troubles of our days overwhelm us. we forget to see the beauty all around us. we forget how fragile we are, how fragile life is.

it is important to remember how quickly life changes and to be grateful for all that we have in our lives. i am grateful, so very grateful to have t home and on the road to recovery. i am also grateful for m who came to the hospital on wednesday and stayed there with me all night. what a kind, kind friend she is!

hope you all have had a nice weekend.

thank you so much for your enthusiasm about the kitchen zine! we're so excited, too!

i have a little garden update for you. we've harvested all of the spinach and used it to top a delicious pizza with whole wheat crust, tomato and rosemary chevre. last night, the last remaining bits were used in a frittata. we've only harvested one more radish since the very first harvest. i don't think we thinned them in time, and they were just too crowded to produce anything. but we do have peas! so exciting to see them. i've decided to start a little garden notebook with reminders, ideas for next year's garden.

tomorrow, i'm heading to charleston for spoleto. this is the second year i will be attending events with my mom, and i'm truly looking forward to it. thursday night i will be seated in the historic dock street theater once again donning my abigail percy jewels. this little theater is so very charming. there is not a bad seat in the house. :) on sunday, i am going to see an israeli modern dance company. i'm not sure if you know this but i adore dance. my mom has never been to see dance so i'm curious to find out if she'll like it. i hear one of the dances is interactive; the dancers swoop down into the crowds and pull audience members on stage for the cha cha. i'm a bit nervous about this because we have aisle seats!!

i'm also on the hunt for a new camera. my trusty little elph needs to retire. any camera suggestions? i know many of you love nikon. does anyone have the scoop on the d40? another photographer suggested the digital rebel? thoughts, suggestions??

and last but definitely not least, i'm so inspired by martha's gather collection. so. very. inspired. i love looking at all of the pieces together. beautiful.

until tomorrow then.

338: a new collaboration

good morning!

i have some news to share with you that i'm really excited about! gracia, louise, and i will be creating a zine together. we've talked about it for so long, and now we've decided on a theme and a deadline (late june). things are certainly falling into place. yay!

gracia suggested a cooking/kitchen theme, and since i've been really enjoying my time in the kitchen lately i felt it was perfect. i will be sharing recipes, mind maps, stories, and maybe a dishwashing portrait or two. you may even hear the charming story of the glass featured in this photo. perhaps, t and i will write a song about our kitchen. you will just have to wait and see where the kitchen muses take me. ;)

louise will grace us with her beautiful watercolor drawings of items that can be found in the kitchen. (remember when she painted the crook's corner grits?) gracia will add her fantastic collages perhaps focusing on feasts in countries she's never even visited. ah, love the idea of food in other countries!

a little bit of melbourne and a little bit of durham nc, portable and in your pocket. kitchen stories, recipes, drawings, and collage in a limited edition of 80. 40 to stay in melbourne and 40 to arrive in durham. i could not be more thrilled to be collaborating with these two women. i am forever inspired by the beauty that they create. hope you all are excited too.

happy tuesday. i'm off to the co-op.

so a few announcements to start this monday morning.

*the documentary project is taking a 2 week break. lisa will host our new word on june 4th.

*also, ship of fools is taking a small break. music for landing planes by will begin on june 1st with abigail at the helm.

*we are still taking submissions for your favorite street. thanks to lj for submitting her favorite street in melbourne. you can see it here. send us your favorite street photo at seestreet@gmail.com.

now a few photos of the weekend:

friday evening. sitting on the porch with peanuts, a reed's extra and a habitat catalog(from ms. babelfish. thanks!).

lots of baking. chocolate chip oatmeal cookies and 3 small french bread loaves. the french bread was a bit of a pain and i totally messed up the recipe but it tasted fine. the cookies were absolutely perfect. you can find the recipe via epicurious here.

have you ever made chimichurri sauce? it's a simple sauce made from olive oil, apple cider vinegar, fresh herbs (cilantro, oregano, thyme, parsley), a dash of salt, and some red pepper flakes. oh and garlic, of course. it was the perfect marinade for our baked tofu on saturday, but i think it would be great on so many things.

t also made the most fabulous crepes on sunday morning. in the past, we've made crepes suzette, crepes with nutella and bananas, etc., but our favorite way to eat them is with turbinado sugar and butter. simply perfect.

i'm dreaming of carrots lately. we are going to have such a nice harvest; i can hardly wait. i swear i'd wear carrot perfume if there was such a thing. oh and look, there is!

lovely links for you today too.

336: early friday walk

it's friday. i think that deserves a standing ovation, don't you?

i don't know if it was eagerness for the weekend to begin or what, but i awoke earlier than usual and decided to walk to the nearest cafe. let me just start by saying it is not my favorite cafe by any means but sometimes fresh air and walking trump the best espresso right? and well, today was that kind of day.

as i set off on my quick little journey, i noticed the morning bustle all around me. birds were competing with one another to see who could sing the loveliest songs as if all of the world depended on these little musical alarms to get them up and going. i passed by the public boarding school and noticed teachers arriving for work. i said good morning to everyone i passed. i walked from the sidewalk onto my favorite stretch of gravel. it lasts oh maybe 35 steps or so but the sound is delicious. it still makes me smile. i rounded three corners and made it to the cafe before it even opened much to the dismay of the barista who was busy moving cafe tables outside.

here is a little visual of my path.

on the way home, i took off my long sleeve red, white, and blue western shirt jacket and tied it around my waist. the air was cool; i wanted to revel in the cool breezes as i know they will soon disappear, and i will not feel them again until autumn. as i turned the second corner, i picked up a leaf that caught my eye.

i've gotten into the habit of pressing leaves into my books in hopes that they will become visual cues that will transport me back to the moment in time when i found the leaf and put it in the book. there is something compelling to me about picking up a book and remembering what was going on in my life when i read it. so, as soon as i arrived home, i opened greenery street and tucked this leaf inside.

i knew i wanted to remember this morning, those cool breezes, and the walk to my not so favorite cafe.

see you monday friends.

thank you all for your wonderful comments on yesterday's post. they made me smile. here is a little snap of the hand-me-down fern. thanks matt.

t is being interviewed by the local paper today about his work for the csa. a photographer will join him in chapel hill and ride along for a few stops. this will be the second time t has been in the paper in a few weeks. the first time he was photographed working at the co-op. :) he's a local celebrity now i guess. hee hee.

in other exciting news, we have tons of white mulberries growing on a tree by our back fence! we had NO idea it was a mulberry tree. i'm excited to bake mulberry muffins. does anyone have any other great mulberry recipes? i was also thinking about a mulberry cobbler. mmmm.

fading fast

last night we had what was most likely the last dinner at matt's fabulously sparse apartment. he moves out next weekend when i'm in charleston. one of the best things about this year has been sharing meals with matt. we try new recipes and take turns hosting, and we always end the night with a cup of tea.

so for one last time, we arrived at matt's with an uncooked sweet potato pie and a glass bowl full of sweetened whipped cream. we are never on time and find that inevitably we will end up calling matt with a bevy of excuses. oh, did you say seven? we were sure it was seven thirty, etc.

matt's apartment looked a bit different last night. piles were beginning to form as he emptied his closets and began to think of paring down even further. of course, he hoped we would take some things off his hands. i agreed to adopt a fern for my study but that was it.

for the main course, matt prepared a green lasagna, which we had never had before. it was layered with spinach pesto, zucchini, tomatoes, and cottage cheese. he also served up thick slices of toast pan fried in garlic butter. {did i mention we don't count calories at these get togethers?}

tom provided the dessert, per matt's request. matt had experienced tom's pie expertise at thanksgiving in the form of what was deemed the best pumpkin pie EVER. no joke. my contribution: why, scouring my cookbooks for a great sweet potato pie recipe, of course. i am southern after all. i decided on a lovely pie recipe from the southern cookbook back to the table. the secret to this recipe is lemon juice and lemon zest and a fabulous cream cheese crust.

we ended with tea all around. chamomile and two reds. much discussion about our futures, a few laughs about previous meals, and then quiet. how do you tell a friend goodbye? i think a recipe exchange is in order.

333: charming

i've been charmed by:

ladybugs

this passage from greenery street by denis mackail:

"In short, life in this month of September is, generally speaking, keyed up to a fresh start. Holidays are over, families are reunited, and the order once again is 'Full Speed Ahead.' Caught in the doldrums of August we may have regretted the departing summer, have sighed over the vanished strawberries and all they signified. Now, however, we look forward almost eagerly to winter's approach. We forget the fogs, the slush, the sore throats and the price of coal, we think only of long evenings by lamplight, of the books which we are really going to read this time, of the bright shop windows and the keen edge of early frosts."

sixteen: comfort

good monday morning to you!

lisa chose our sixteenth word, comfort.

first, LISA's response:

comfort

Comfort :: feeling secure :: happy in your own skin :: comfort food [natto,
macaroni and cheese] :: comfort zone [in the studio, with friends] :: comfortable [relaxed, at ease] :: seeking comfort [climbing into bed] :: fighting it [too much and you become static]

Comfort is something I seek and something I push against. I think I knew I'd be thinking about what makes me comfortable when I was going to be away from home. There is comfort in routine, in one's house, in one's own bed, in what is familiar.

I like when things look worn - like they have been used. There are moments when objects, sounds, colors, smells, memories, the feel of something all provide comfort. People with whom you feel connected - free to share and laugh and be silly - provide incredible comfort [and pleasure]. This idea was solidified on my trip.

I also fight comfort as I have a hard time sitting still. I don't like idle
hands. I fear that if I am comfortable I am not exploring, changing, growing, experiencing.

I seek a balance.

comfort :: dogs

Seeing these guys luxuriate in comfort always helps..... I'm curious - what
comforts you?

now, MY response:

comfort list

this morning i penned a quick comfort list; i didn't want to overthink it. these are the things that comfort me most though i think they change, too, from time to time. once when i lived alone, the sound of skateboards at night was the most comforting sound in the world. that's because i knew my neighbors were outside, and it made me feel safe and secure. even today when i hear the sound of skateboards (the thwack and the then the roll of wheels) it is strangely comforting and it brings me back to the year i lived in that house.

watercolor
playing with paint (particularly watercolors) is comforting, particularly when it is just play with no expectations in mind.

rain
rainy days equal comfort in my mind. i guess it's the coziness of being indoors, wrapped in a blanket perhaps and sipping on warm tea.

as a southerner, much of the idea of comfort is tied to food. the ultimate comfort food to me is my mom's macaroni and cheese casserole, which by the way, i made last night in honor of my mom and mother's day (hi mom!).

i also thought of how one's idea of comfort changes depending on one's situation. what's comfortable or comforting while camping is much different than what's comfortable or comforting at home.

what is the one thing that comforts you no matter what?

hope your day is lovely!

331: popsicles and other misc. stuff

i was up early this morning, before the sun had even peeked its head out from behind the clouds. summery weather in the forecast today and to tell the truth, i had gotten used to the cooler temperatures. today we southerners will be snapped back to reality. it is may, afterall, and with may comes heat + humidity. but with heat + humidity comes relief in the form of locopops. perhaps i'll take a photo walk to my favorite popsicle shop later today.

once there, you must make a difficult decision. will it be cream based or water based today? mexican chocolate or grapefruit basil, for example? go with your gut. usually, i choose a cream based flavor while t prefers water based flavors. then i take one lick of his ice pop and beg him to switch with me. :) that's why it's so important to travel to locopops in groups of two or more. fyi.

my newest knitting project=dishcloths. simple and good for practicing. thank you gwen for reminding me how to cast on.

highlights of the week in:

eating and enjoying: pistachios, arugula

photographs: open window times

inspiration: the ken isaacs photos in dwell (may)

books: i'm reading the geography of home & greenery street (aka persephone no. 35)

smell: honeysuckle growing on our fence

music: i heart the mendoza line

thoughts: circles {more on this next week}

enjoy your weekend!

330: crumbs

we've had a good deal of rain and clouds lately and this morning, fog. not much light for photos but that does stop me? it should be my cue for a photo break, especially since i am already at 20% of my photo capacity here on blogger. i have a feeling that i will be making the switch to a new home soon.

last night, i finally made my way to the kitchen in hopes of whipping up a batch of graham crackers. i know, i know. it's taken me awhile. the first recipe was a little more complicated than i had hoped, but this weekend i stumbled upon the graham cracker recipe in the enchanted broccoli forest and it looked easy enough. the ingredients mixed up easily into a nice crumb that smelled divine. t couldn't stop eating little bits from the bowl. i thought, "hey, i'm going to pull this off", but then that was before i tried to roll them out. um, i don't know where i went wrong, but the dough was a giant, crumbly mess. it just would not hold together and became more and more unmanageable as i tried to "fix" it. finally, with t looking over my shoulder and trying to calm me, we agreed that i should just put the crumbly mess right onto a baking sheet and then press it down and score it there...which i did. i glanced down at the blob of graham cracker dough and sighed as i put it into the oven.

the results were pretty pitiful in terms of appearance and i was too embarassed to photograph them. yes, that's right. i ended up with misshapen graham cookies instead of graham crackers, but the flavor was excellent. i'm having a few with coffee right now. anyway, it's obvious that i'm not a graham cracker natural. will have to work on that. if any of you have the cookbook, give the recipe a try and let me know where i went wrong. please!

back to the csa delivery route today...we're aiming to be done by dark. wish us luck.

329: gardening & eating

our little garden is finally taking shape. we have beautiful rows of carrots, spinach, radishes, peas, and lettuce. our potato plants are nice and tall with thick forest green stems. dotting the edges of our landscape you will find red cabbage, garlic, and chocolate mint (thanks e!). the hops are spiraling up their supports and the barley is thick and lush. i've watched many gardens grow over the years but it never ceases to amaze me that we can grow our own food from seeds.

we also have dandelions growing out of control like this one in the photo above which is nearly as tall as me. the birds have flocked to our little yard, too. i've even begun to make a list of the different species: mourning dove, cardinal, robin, ruby throated hummingbird, mockingbird, sparrow, carolina wren, northern flicker, chickadee. there are still a few that i haven't been able to identify, but i'm working on it. :) in addition, we have a furry little mammal who stops by from time to time, a brown bunny that tends to nibble on clover and not our veggies. such a polite little visitor, don't you think?

we are so lucky to be surrounded by all of this natural beauty. nature is and has always been a great source of inspiration for me.

last night we had matt over for dinner (and to show him our garden). it was one of those simple dinners put together in a flash of inspiration. easy and fresh, not from our garden quite yet though as local as possible.

our menu:

multi-colored shells, fusili, and orzo with pesto, pine nuts, fresh cracked pepper, and arugula. rosemary bread and local strawberries on the side. water with sprigs of chocolate mint to drink.

so simple, yet just perfect. i can't wait until we are able to fix an entire meal using ingredients from our backyard!

hope you have a good day!
shari
ps: we need contributors over at street. this month...photograph your favorite street. it's as simple as that!

328: in which blog friends meet up

in case you are wondering, if you haven't met blog friends in person before, it is really AMAZING. gwen, f. pea, and i met for brunch in raleigh at the art museum. we had a lovely meal despite the fact that we were unable to get sides of grits. :)

they are truly wonderful, so easy to talk to, very warm and welcoming, passionate in their beliefs. later, i stopped by durham to pick up t and we met up with gwen,
f. pea and her partner, grub, and gwen's brother johnny at padgett station organic bistro in carrboro. we took over a picnic table and began knitting, chatting, snacking, and taking polas. everyone was so much fun to talk to...i hope we can all get together again soon!

327: recap of the first delivery day of the season

last week i promised to document our csa delivery day so here you go. the farm is so peaceful in the early morning hours. this is the one incentive for rising so early. as for packing up the van, well, we had a few minor setbacks. the ramp did not work so t had to use a makeshift one and then in my sleepy haze, i put too many large boxes on a pallet but other than that, it was smooth sailing.

the essentials to csa delivery include:

lots of hot coffee
a good map
a list of delivery addresses with directions
npr
a blanket, hat, gloves, etc. as the a/c is blaring to keep the veggies cool
a cell phone in case you're lost :)
lunch that is easy to eat like apples, granola bars, chips
a pen to write down notes
a good sense of humor

the one thing we needed but did not have:

contacts--because glasses fog up when we step outside to the warmer air. it's really pretty annoying.

this weekend was nice. we both caught up on our sleep but also enjoyed time with friends on saturday and sunday.

i have loads of polaroids from my afternoon with gwen and f. pea. i'll share those tomorrow. we had tons of fun!

and don't forget, the documentary project is being hosted at lisa's. i'll give you a little hint about the word. it's another companion word. see if you can guess.

happy monday.

we had a 14 hour work day yesterday and then we were back up at 5 am planning for today's deliveries. poor t is back on the delivery route today, and i'm just worn out. needless to say, i don't have much energy for a post. posting will resume as usual on monday.

until then please visit:

this weekend, i will be going to a reading featuring this book, stopping by chapel hill comics for freebies, meeting bugheart and f pea for high tea (hooray!), and
relaxing.

oh and the lemon curd is SO good. i put three dollops on my yogurt this morning, swirled it in, and added granola. what a yummy breakfast!

hope you all are well. no migraines in two days. things are looking up.

325: less screen time, more lemons

hi friends.

just time for a quick hello today. i've been dealing with migraines lately which is my cue to cut back on screen time.

a tidbit of news: i will be going with t on his first csa delivery this season (tomorrow!), riding shotgun, navigating, and jumping out to deliver boxes and ring doorbells. should be fun. i'll bring along my camera and document the very long day.

lemon blossoms. gosh, i just want to bottle this scent! instead, i will be making lemon curd and lemon mousse this afternoon. you can find the recipes in the latest issue of everyday food. i wanted to do this last weekend but the co-op was out of lemons.

hope you all have a great day!

324: may day

may. verdant, blossoming, begging me to go barefoot, grassy perfumed, lovely precursor to a full blown steamy southern summer. welcome. we had record temps yesterday. when i left the co-op, the thermometer read 93 degrees! okay, that was in the sun but still...

lots going on today. be sure to pop over to:

**mav's for some p2p beauty

**shanna's new website, blog, and the unveiling of her may collection

**sally's new etsy shop (hooray!)

**lisa's newest underdog ink collection featuring fab jewelry and tees

**mati's etsy shop for a peek at her new prints

**abigail's etsy shop to see her beautiful honeysuckle poster. love.

also have you seen gracia and louise's newest collaboration, steph and lisa's collaborative pieces, wendy's word paintings and camilla's new painting? if not, pop over and check them out too. all so AMAZING and inspiring!

tonight we are preparing an indian feast at matt's to celebrate the changing of the calendar. t, matt and i are all sharing kitchen duty, and hopefully we'll be up to our ears in raita, pakoras, paneer makni, and naan by the end of this evening. we will at least have entertainment as matt is going to a psychic earlier in the day, and i'm sure he'll have plenty of stories for us.

i'm reading, reading and reading but more on that tomorrow.
